Twelve Years of Finding Myself – Phu To's story at GIBTK
Twelve years is a number that is long enough for a person to change, and long enough for a journey to become part of one’s very being. For me, the time I’ve spent with Giving It Back To Kids (GIBTK) has not just been a job. It has been a heartfelt journey of transformation, of becoming, and above all – a journey of growth.
Me in the early days at GIBTK
I joined GIBTK as a young teacher, full of dreams and the belief that I could do something meaningful for the community. Back then, I had no idea how much I would learn in return. The days spent with children in difficult circumstances taught me more than I could have imagined – about resilience, about gratitude, and about the quiet strength of empathy.
I had the incredible opportunity to teach children here
Their bright smiles, innocent eyes, and heartfelt stories became mirrors that reflected not only their world but also mine. It was through them that I realized I was the one being “given back to” – given back the ability to feel deeply, to live with intention, and to love more sincerely.
Their bright smiles always bring me pride
After several years, I moved into a new chapter as a program coordinator. It was a shift that felt daunting at first – stepping out of the classroom and into broader responsibilities, working directly with communities, partners, and long-term support initiatives. I remember the self-doubt clearly – the quiet fear that I might not be good enough, not adaptable enough.
My mission of bringing clean water to people
But at GIBTK, I was never alone. The supportive environment, the guidance of my leaders, and the genuine care from my colleagues helped me gradually overcome those fears. I learned to listen not only with my ears, but also with my heart. I learned to plan, to collaborate, and to lead. I came to understand that growth isn’t always loud – sometimes, it’s found in the quiet moments of showing up, learning, and staying true to your purpose.
My amazing leaders
Now, as the manager of the Water Filter Program, I carry that sense of purpose into every project. It moves me deeply to witness the journey of GIBTK in partnership with ATTA, bringing clean water to families in need across provinces throughout the country.
Me with the executive director’s family from ATTA
Each trip brings new faces, new stories, and memories that stay with us long after we return. In many areas, people share how they once had no choice but to use water from ponds, streams, or wells. While they used these water sources, they were not certain whether the water source was safe enough for direct use. The consequences were felt especially by children, who suffered from digestive issues and illness caused by unsafe water.
Me sharing knowledge about using the water filter with the community
When we ask what matters most in their lives, many people answer without hesitation: “Having clean water to drink every day.”
Before and after bringing filtered water to the people
Seeing the pure joy on the children’s faces as they drink cool, clean water is coupled with the relief in their parents’ eyes knowing their kids are safer. Through witnessing their joy I’ve come to understand the true power of community support. Each water filter is more than just a practical solution. It’s a symbol of hope. A promise of better days. A small, tangible step toward a healthier, more sustainable life.
Smiles like these are my greatest motivation
A mong the most sacred milestones of my life is when I met my wife, Minh Thoa, at GIBTK. We crossed paths through shared work and a calling – to live for others. Over time, that shared purpose blossomed into love. Today, we have a little family with two beautiful children – a daughter and a son – all beginning from the serendipity called GIBTK.
I met my wife at GIBTK and now have a happy family
Looking back over these twelve years, I see a person who has become more grounded, more grateful, and more aware of who he truly is. GIBTK is not just a workplace; it is a home for the heart, a place where the person I am today was nurtured and shaped.
Twelve years in, I don’t know what lies ahead. But I do know this: I walk forward with a heart full of gratitude, and a spirit ready to continue growing, giving, and walking alongside those who need it most.
"We highly appreciate you and thank you for transforming lives"
